bob : i imagine you were being watched
Travis : We never stayed in a room
Travis : Just had a day pass
Travis : We assumed we were
bob : were you on the lookout for a honey trap
Travis : They tried to impress the West in Berlin by showing their "best" which was still bad....
Travis : honey trap?
bob : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hon...
bob : you obviously dont read John Le Carre
Travis : I know someone who went to Dresden and they accused a lady on the bus of using more than three squares of toilet paper and pulled over
Travis : I do read Le Carre as a matter of fact
Travis : I'm a Smiley fan
Travis : And no, I don't think we were being seduced Mr Bond lol
Travis : We were a couple of young kids, not Jason Bourne
Travis : And there were other Western tourists doing the same thing
Travis : They did scrutinize our passports thoroughly though
Travis : It was a little scary, but mostly interesting
bob : i remember going through customs in Franfurt and being dealt with by this very scary evil looking guy who you wouldnt want to mess with
bob : he never gave eye contact and did everything by hand signals
Travis : At least Frankfurt was on the "free" side
Travis : Huge US base there
bob : and then when passed and we move on we noticed that he wasnt even paying attention....he was reading a comic up against his computer screen
Travis : See, your imagination got the best of you
bob : Frankfurt airpor is huge and smells of hotdogs
bob : there are dozens of little kiosks that sell them
bob : its a Lufthansa ub
Travis : The thing I remember about Frankfort was kinda gross. We were walking down the sidewalk looking in the shop windows and we came across one of many porno shops and there was a poster of a topless woman bearing her back
Travis : But she had whip marks and what looked like cigarette burn scars and she was smiling....a bit kinky this one
Travis : A bit much and kids could see it, I was thinking wtf?
bob : now the picture would be of someone inflicting those marks
Travis : I thought it was a bit racey for the main street
Travis : Germans can be a strange lot
bob : nice motorways
bob : dont think much of their leadership
Travis : I actually got a speeding ticket on the autobahn
Travis : I thought there was no speed limit but there are places where you have to slow down
bob : i thought there was no speed limit
bob : cunning krauts
Travis : At one of the pay stations they hit me up
Travis : not cheap either
Travis : and I was on a budget
bob : i have only passed thru the airpot
bob : no desire to visit
Travis : Listen to this deal......At the time Europe was hurting for US and Canadian tourism due to Ghadafi and all that mess
Travis : Few North Americans were going there because of the danger and so the Europeans gave sweet deals
Travis : At the time a roundtrip ticket from Salt Lake City to Fresno, California was 198 dollars
Travis : But I got a roundtrip ticket from Salt Lake City to London for 189, we HAD to go
bob : it must have been a little like that after the terrorist attacks in London and Paris
bob : well you would
Travis : It was practically free
Travis : I couldn't live HERE for that price
bob : round trip ticket from here to europe now is about $1500 cheapest
Travis : So we got that deal, only three days did we stay in a hostel in 5 weeks and we slept on the trains with a 500 dollar unlimited eurail pass, any train any time
bob : and that is on runner band airways with a 9 hr stopover in Gangzhou
bob : you can do that when you are young
bob : would you do that now?
Travis : we would get up half an hour before we got to our next place and shave and shampoo our hair really quick and go again...and mostly eat sandwiches we would make on the cheap
Travis : Total cost of the trip for 5 weeks about 1600 total
Travis : No Bob, not in a million years
Travis : You get older you need more creature comforts and privacy. And to walk all day every day would kill my feet now
Travis : And to even stay in a youth hostel now would not be fun
bob : we walked all day every day on our last trip
Travis : When you're young it's fine
bob : one day we walked 22 kms
Travis : I've done that...but for 5 weeks straight,...now....would be a pain
bob : we did it for probably 3 weeks out of the trip each day
bob : averaging 10-15 km a day
Travis : So we'd like get to Brussels at 7 am. Before we left the station we'd decide where we were going the next day and catch a night train. But the next place by train may only be a couple of hours away, and we needed to sleep
bob : i couldnt handle no sleep
Travis : So we'd find a place, any place, about 4 hours away just to sleep, get off and catch a train right back to our place for the next day, all free since the eurail pass as already paid for in advance and get another 3 hours or so...for a total of maybe 6 or 7 and do say Zurich on day 2, Copenhagen day 3
Travis : So no real in-depth tourism, just hit and miss, but it was fun
Travis : Stayed longer in Rome, London and Paris
Travis : They required more time
Travis : That's a lot of walking you did Bob, and you're no youngster lol
Travis : Was this with your first wife or the sixth?
bob : its makes you fit
Travis : Yes, out of necessity, still....I'm glad I did it when I did
bob : all you need to be albe to say at the end of the day is ...yes i have seen the Eiffel tower
bob : my present wife
Travis : I bet the same trip a year before would have been 2-3 times as much and I wouldn't have gone, but the airfare was so cheap.....
Travis : so no 6 or 7?
bob : you can look at as many pic as you want but seeing these place is real life is amazing
bob : wife number 2
Travis : There is seeing the sights and then really relaxing and absorbing the place....we had no time for the latter unfortunately, we were always on the move
bob : dont knock marriage and divorce untill you have tried it
Travis : I believe in marriage, sir
bob : i do too
Travis : And divorce is an unfortunate reality for so many
bob : why stay married if neither of you are enjoying it
Travis : But better to divorce than to remain unhappy for decades
bob : my ex wife did very well out of the divorce
Travis : you mean financially?
bob : yes and getting rid of me
bob : it was very amicable and no court case was needed
Travis : And you had your daughter with no 1?
