1230690 google : that sounds fun
1230691 google : it happens
1230692 Ana Bolena : No, but one of them told me once: I wish I had been born 10 years before so I could propose you
1230694 google : how did you feel about it?
1230696 Ana Bolena : I told him I would have said yes
1230698 Ana Bolena : I felt flattered
1230699 google : I dont undertand why he didnt keep going and ask u for a date
1230700 Ana Bolena : cause he is 16 years old
1230701 Ana Bolena : and I am 28
1230702 google : my bad, I read wrong
1230703 Ana Bolena : I teach children and teenagers mostly
1230704 google : are you a mod too?
1230705 Ana Bolena : No, I am not
1230706 alp : Most people say that most of the Spanish people does not speak English in Spain, is it correct?
1230707 Ana Bolena : Yes, it is
1230708 Ana Bolena : People do not speak English properly, not even our politicians do
1230709 alp : So if we come to Spain we should learn Spanish before coming
1230710 Ana Bolena : yeah, you should
1230711 google : I had this teacher who was a psychologist also, he was teaching English and that guy was the smartest and funniest teacher I ever had, all his classes were great, everyone had a good time and at the same time we learnt a lot, the dropping rate for his classes was near zero, no one wanted to miss them.
1230712 Ana Bolena : that's cool
1230713 Ana Bolena : I try to be funny too
1230714 Ana Bolena : I use Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Star Wars and all that stuff to teach them
1230715 google : I think was kind of sarcastic sometimes
1230716 Ana Bolena : nobody cares if "Mary likes pizza"
1230717 google : he*
1230718 Ana Bolena : but if "Darth Vader likes pineapple pizza" then, they care
1230719 alp : Once I had a video call with 2 Spanish man for job interview. And I had too much trouble to communicate with them. They were speaking like Spanish.
1230720 google : he made his points trying to make you understand how dumb we were but not in bad way
1230721 google : I dont know if that makes sense
1230722 Ana Bolena : yes, I do
1230723 Ana Bolena : when I teach my students I normally do that too
1230724 Ana Bolena : it is a way to make them aware of their mistakes
1230725 Ana Bolena : for example, when I ask them something like do you think mobile phones should be used at school? they answer: In my opinion, yes
1230726 Ana Bolena : and that's all
1230727 Ana Bolena : and I often make jokes about that
1230728 alp : Are they allowed to use mobile phones?
1230729 google : he would say, next one, who's the next that's gonna read that paragraph, while he was looking at you, then we say "me" he then answered, not, the bench thats next to you.
1230730 Ana Bolena : No, not normally
1230731 Ana Bolena : although I let them use them from time to time
1230732 Ana Bolena : well, that sort of things help to keep students awake.
1230733 google : Kids are very different now, some are very disrespectful
1230734 Ana Bolena : when I explain grammar, which is boring as hell, I do it making jokes and using lots of gifs and colourful things
1230735 Ana Bolena : so they pay attention
1230736 google : If it were on me, I wouldnt allow them to have their phones
1230737 Ana Bolena : I let them use their mobile phones to play quizzes
1230738 alp : Most teachers doesnt care the awakeness of students.
1230739 Ana Bolena : I know
1230740 Ana Bolena : but I do
1230741 Ana Bolena : when I notice they aren't paying attention I start singing
1230742 google : I had a teacher she told us, lets go the computer lab to do some grammar exercises, and I said, if we are going to do that, can I go home? I can do that at home, I come here to practice, she was kinda mad at me
1230743 Ana Bolena : well, she was right
1230744 google : she was lazy
1230745 Ana Bolena : you were disrespectful to her
1230746 Ana Bolena : maybe she was but that doesn't allow you to look down on her
1230747 google : I wasnt, whats the point to go to a computer and look for a website to do some exercises if you can do that all by yourself at home
1230748 Ana Bolena : even if you think that, that's quite rude
1230749 Ana Bolena : you could have just suggested anything else
1230750 google : some teacher dont care about their students, they just go to get a check
1230751 Ana Bolena : I agree
1230752 Ana Bolena : but you could have shown her your disagreement in many ways
1230753 Ana Bolena : My English teacher wasn't very good either
1230754 google : she changed her plan and said, lets do some convo which was more helpful than visiting a website which I can find in my personal computer
1230755 Ana Bolena : and I knew it as everybody there did
1230756 google : well, being honest doesnt mean being disrespectful
1230757 Ana Bolena : and maybe she would have changed it the same way if you had politely suggested her to do so
1230758 Ana Bolena : if I suggested an activity to my students and they told me: if we're going to do that, I better leave, I would feel offended
1230759 google : I wasnt impolite, being honest and frank is something that not many people take well
1230760 Ana Bolena : the problem is a teacher is someone who knows more and better than you
1230761 google : I didnt go there to waste my time in a computer just because she was lazy and didnt want to do anything else
1230762 Ric : ‹@google› Was that an English lesson?
1230763 alp : I had an English teacher. She was behaving in the same way as you Ana. She was trying everything to make lessons interesting and make us willing to learn. She was caring us too much. I learned a lot from her. Personally, she wasn't only English teacher for me but also a life coach. I loved her very much. And I was studying English not only for myself but also to make her proud. She added a lot to me. And do you know, after all this years, after 16 years, we are still talking each other with her :)
1230764 google : she did know more than me, but that doesnt mean I wasnt aware of what she was trying to do just to avoid having a regular class
1230765 google : I dont remember what It was about
1230766 Ana Bolena : that's lovely, alp
1230767 alp : I wish all the teachers to be like her, like you
1230768 Ana Bolena : I would like my students to think this way
1230769 Ana Bolena : well, I must say I think it's fine that there are different teaching styles
1230770 Ana Bolena : Some students prefer strict and serious teachers
1230771 google : a constructive critic makes you improve, but not many people are all open to it
1230772 Ana Bolena : telling someone: if that's what we're going to do, I'm off doesn't seem constructive to me, seems rude
1230773 Ana Bolena : but ey, if she wasn't offended, maybe it's just a sensitivity thing
1230774 Ric : I'd be more focused on content rather than games too. That's not saying I wouldn't strive to make the class interesting or even fun. My goal with students is to make them learn as much as possible
1230775 alp : My teacher was serious in the lesson, but she was like a mother, sister in free time
1230776 google : well, if you were in my shoes, probably you could've seen it in a different way, my education was as important as her feelings.
1230777 Ana Bolena : maybe, google
1230778 Ana Bolena : Ric, it's not a question of content vs games. You can mix them
1230779 Ana Bolena : that's what I do
1230780 google : why would I waste my time with someone not willing to teach?
1230781 Ric : Bear in mind students take lessons to learn not to play
1230782 Ric : that's my whole point
1230783 Ana Bolena : who said you can't learn playing?
1230784 Ric : that's not saying you can't learn while you play
1230785 google : I agree
1230786 Ric : but it can't always be fun
1230787 Ana Bolena : plus, not everything you can do to make a lesson more enjoyable is necessarily a game
